We are iNteractive therefore we critique the iPad

In my earlier blog, I talked about how much our team has enjoyed getting to know the iPad. But as techies, they are pretty beady-eyed about everything to do with interactive media, and they have identified some improvements they are looking for from Steve and the team when they look at future enhancements to the iPad.

  • The BKA team don't like that there is no independent file structure to save files into, and get files from which  means getting your own data in and out of the iPad  could be tricky.
  • You can't print from the iPad (although apparently Steve Jobs says 'it's coming'.)
  • It's hard to do multitasking, something our team will be looking for in later software updates.
  • As developers, the team also noted that there was no 'Adobe Flash' plugin available which they felt would limit web experience.
  • It's a bit heavy compared to a Kindle - not a worry when you are using the Hairy McLairy app to read a goodnight story to a sleepy child - but that extra weight could be a pain if you are looking to read War and Peace.

These are niggles.  It delivers a great user experience, and it is not surprising that 0.17 % of web traffic in the USA  was coming from iPads within just three months of its launch.  It's an enjoyable luxury, a great portable 'peripheral' computer to use when you want to sit on the sofa and browse the internet or play games.

Couldn't agree more on the multitasking and the lack of Flash web plugin. As a Flash developer I actually don't mind that Apple clamped down on cross-compiled apps, but this device definitely needs the Flash player to deliver the web in it's best light.
The other thing I would add to your list is tabbed browsing!

Maak Bow replies       I would have to say using it for "normal" browsing, tabs was the biggest thing i missed...along with other things like my delicious extension. A cool device for sure but missing many things we are used to. It's browsing, but not as we know it. And I'm sorry Stevo but its definitely browsing at its best.

.

I agree with Maak, I was a little peeved by Steven's boast that it was the best way to browse the net. That said, I was actually pleasantly surprised by how many of my favourite sites had already jumped to HTML5 video and therefore had viewable videos.

Also an unintended benefit of the lack of flash support is that you dont have to look at obnoxious flash banner ads!
